Some kids worry more than others. But what do you do with a kid who says, night after night, "I'm really worried about global warming, Mom." This was my dilemma a few years ago with our daughter, Helen. I couldn't look under the bed or in the closet for the global warming monster and say, "Nothing there, dear." Instead, as a Girl Scout troop leader, I guided my daughter's troop through two new books: "Breathe," about air pollution, and "Sow What?" about eating local, organic food. These materials really got everyone thinking about what they could do to make changes in their lives.
Green Living: Stay Informed & Engaged, not Fearful
John Hubbuch's op-ed "The only thing we have to fear ..." (Wednesday Journal, 11/11/14) was right on the money when he said that the cable TV, social media and news worlds are reinforcing creating a climate of fear. It's true that on a minute-by-minute basis, the American media present a myriad of hypothetical scenarios and one-off crimes that are frightening, yet highly unlikely. Turning off the TV or putting down your smart phone is one way to stay sane.
Connect to Action: Help Transform Madison Street in Oak Park
Madison Street has long been a street that does not meet the expectations of safety for walking and biking for Oak Park. The Oak Park Board of Trustees will meet December 8 to discuss a plan to invest TIF money to redesign Madison Street. Let’s take this opportunity to make a significant difference in the degree of biking and walking friendliness in our community. Please see the letter/petition to OP Village Board.
Recycle this Holiday Season
With all the cooking you are about to do, there may be leftover containers of used cooking oil. Don’t throw them down the drain. Cooking oil sticks to sewer pipes, causing clogs and breaks that are costly for homeowners and cities to fix. Also, grease can interfere with water treatment at sanitary facilities.

Here's an example: "Let’s Talk About Water," by Lea Kichler, the 2013 winner of the high school category.
