Liquid Cooking Oil With all the cooking you are about to do, there may be leftover containers of used cooking oil. Don’t throw them down the drain. Cooking oil sticks to sewer pipes, causing clogs and breaks that are costly for homeowners and cities to fix. Also, grease can interfere with water treatment at sanitary facilities.
Recycle that oil into bio-fuel instead. Bring used, liquid vegetable cooking oil in a milk jug, bucket, or container between 9 a.m. and noon, Saturday, November 29, to River Forest Village Hall, 400 Park Ave. No motor oil please. Cooking oil will be recycled by Chicago Biofuels. Check www.scarce.org or call 630-545-9710 for the latest information on this project.
Holiday Lights When you pull out those holiday lights, half the bulbs don’t work, or the strings are entirely non-functional. Frustrating. But don’t pitch them.
In Oak Park, residents can recycle unwanted holiday lights and extension cords from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout December and January at the Public Works Center, 201 South Blvd. Mini, rope, LED, C7 and C9 lights will be accepted. Call 708-358-5700 or e-mail publicworks@oak-park.us for more details.
In River Forest, residents can drop off working and non-working holiday lights and extension cords 24 hours a day from December 15 to January 15, in a container near River Forest Village Hall on Central Avenue between Park and Keystone. No CFL or fluorescent bulbs. Only holiday lights, please.
